La Fenice Theater
The Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice is one of the most famous and important theaters in Italy.
The Origins of the Name La Fenice
It was erected between 1790 and 1792, and as the name suggests, it represents a rebirth. This rebirth refers to the Nobile Società dei Palchettisti (Noble Society of Box-Seat Holders), which built this splendid theater after the luxurious Teatro San Benedetto, managed by this society, changed hands and passed into the possession of the wealthy Venier family, who owned the land where the theater stood.
For this reason, the society built an even more beautiful and luxurious theater and named it La Fenice.
During its two centuries of existence, the theater suffered two devastating fires that destroyed it. But like the legendary bird, it rose even more beautiful from its ashes both times.
In the early 19th century, La Fenice hosted politically significant events and served as the State Theater. To receive Emperor Napoleon, the hall was decorated in silver and light blue, and a luxurious box was created. In the following years, a sumptuous royal box was designed.
