Venice Carnival
Venice Carnival is one of the most cherished and renowned carnivals in the world, attracting thousands of visitors every year.
The history of the Venetian Carnival
The first documented evidence of celebrations in the lagoon city dates back 900 years. During this period, the population, particularly the lower classes, were granted a time of festivities and entertainment. Locals and foreigners would come together in the city to celebrate, wearing masks, dancing and singing.
The costumes and masks guaranteed anonymity and levelled social differences, enabling the population to abandon restraint and escape the constraints of the Venetian Republic.
The celebration experienced a decline over the centuries, coinciding with the end of the Venetian Republic. However, grand festivities were revived in 1979, thanks to popular initiatives supported by the institutions.
When does Venice Carnival take place?
As the start date is linked to Easter Sunday, it changes every year, beginning approximately 70 days before Easter.
When should I visit Venice Carnival?
Venice Carnival lasts for just over two weeks, with the main events taking place on Shrove Thursday and Shrove Tuesday. However, the highest number of visitors arrives at the weekend. For a more serene experience, it is advisable to avoid Saturdays and Sundays.
Carnival Tours
During the Carnival period, you can join a guided tour led by a theatrical guide in a mask. They will reveal the secrets of Venice and recount anecdotes about La Serenissima (the Republic of Venice), Giacomo Casanova, the city's haunted areas, and much more.
Learn to Create Carnival Masks
If you're interested in how the splendid Venetian masks are made, you can learn from a master craftsman in Venice. You'll have the opportunity to design and create your own mask to take home as a souvenir.
The master speaks English, French, Italian and Spanish and will help you create a mask to wear during Carnival in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Colours and materials are included in the price, and you'll also receive a participation diploma.
This activity is available all year round and is suitable for the whole family.
