History of the Venetian Carnival
The first documented evidence of celebrations in the lagoon city dates back 900 years. The population, particularly the lower classes, were granted a period of festivities and entertainment during which locals and foreigners would come together in the city, celebrating while masked, dancing, and singing.
The costumes and masks ensured anonymity and the leveling of social differences, allowing the population to let loose and escape the constraints of the Venetian Republic.
Over the centuries, the celebration experienced a decline coinciding with the end of the Venetian Republic. However, a revival of grand festivities occurred in 1979, thanks to popular initiatives supported by the institutions.
When is the Venice Carnival?
The start date of the Carnival is linked to Easter Sunday, so it changes every year and begins approximately 70 days before Easter.
When to Visit the Venice Carnival?
The Venice Carnival lasts a little over two weeks, with the main events taking place on Fat Thursday and Fat Tuesday. However, the highest influx of visitors occurs during the weekend. If you prefer a more serene experience, it's advisable to avoid Saturdays and Sundays.

The master speaks English, French, Italian, and Spanish and will assist you in creating the mask you'll wear during Carnival in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.
